Improving Super Duty performance with Airdog
One of the most exciting pieces of diesel performance gear currently on the market is Airdog's line of air/fuel separators for the very desirable reasons of increased torque, horsepower, fuel economy and greatly reduced emissions. What we're basically talking about is one of the most perfect upgrades for your Ford Powerstroke that's legal in all 50 states and meets CARB guidelines for emissions. As an extra bonus, air/fuel separators improve the lifespan of your fuel injectors, saving you a ton of cash in the long run. An Airdog air/fuel separator is an excellent upgrade for Super Duty owners who have to consistently haul heavy loads or anyone else who wants to squeeze every last ounce of raw power out of their Ford truck without going to the extremes of a DPF delete or other extensive powertrain overhaul.
Airdog's system provides all of this enhanced performance by pulling out nearly all of the air bubbles that get trapped in your fuel allowing an uninterrupted stream of diesel to hit your injectors. This more efficient flow lets your injectors have a larger spray pattern that improves your Powerstroke's combustion timing. The more precise ignition timing catches the piston near the top of its stroke, instead of near its trailing edge, giving you more power. The lack of excess air from the injectors means that your air/fuel ratio is nearly perfect, reducing your emissions and improving fuel economy. Your fuel injectors appreciate the cleaner burn, keeping their nozzles and internals relatively free from carbon build-up and other contaminates caused by uneven combustion mixtures.
![]() Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines are greatly effected by even the slightest differences in air/fuel mixtures. During normal operation, small pockets of air from your fuel sloshing around in your tank or being returned by the fuel system get trapped in your fuel. These bubbles get mixed into the fuel being sucked into your truck's fuel system and are carried through the lines to your engine. The trapped air throws off the timing of your fuel injectors causing them to push fuel into the combustion chamber when the piston is already beginning its downward motion. The excess air causes incomplete combustion and shoots NOx emissions through the roof. The Airdog systems circumvent all of this trouble by separating all of those trapped air bubbles and rerouting them back to the fuel tank instead of the engine.
![]() Airdog kits are pretty simple in principle. They feature a functional pump with attached fuel filter and water separator complete with all of their necessary fuel line fittings. The included water separator has a drain cap for easy maintenance. Airdog designed their air/fuel separators to be extremely compact and each kit comes with a bracket for attaching the system onto your truck's frame rail, where it'll be safe from rough roads and common debris. Airdog's various kits are designed to work with all of your OE fuel system components as a direct bolt-on upgrade. Lower-tiered Airdog kits, like this FP-100 kit are for Powerstrokes with few, if any, modifications whose engines run under 500 horsepower. Customers with heavily-modified Super Duty trucks with horsepower ratings in the 500 to 800 range, should check out the Airdog 2 DF-165 kit that features a more powerful pump.
