The 1987 Mustang saw the last major redesign for the Fox Body Mustangs and included a completely overhauled exterior and the elimination of the V6 model, leaving just the GT with its 302cid V8 and the LX with its 2.3L inline four-cylinder engine. Despite the significant age of these Mustangs, a large performance parts aftermarket still exists with parts and accessories that can add power and replace aging exterior items to keep the Mustang looking as great as it performs.

The Fox Bodies are blessed with an easily-modifiable engine bay, and several components can be directly replaced with high-performance variants that can give up to a 35 horsepower combined performance boost. The easiest engine compartment addition is a throttle body and EGR spacer that give the engine up to a 12 horsepower bump by making airflow into the intake manifold more efficient by making the V8 breathe easier. Swapping out the restrictive stock airbox with a high performance Cold Air Intake will put up to another dozen horses onto your engine's power rating by pouring massive amounts of cool air into the combustion chamber by using a specialized conical filter and a heat shield that creates a pocket of air that's better protected from engine heat. Underdrive pulleys add even more power on naturally-aspirated Foxes with some versions giving the engine back up to 15 horsepower by slowing down the speed of belt-driven accessories.

Stage 3 Motorsports offers a large selection of exhaust upgrades that can be mixed and match to fit both sound and performance needs. Sound gains can be accomplished by simply swapping the bland sounding stock mufflers, kickover pipes and tips with a cat-back exhaust system that come in a variety of configurations that include full muffler deletes that give the subtle Fox Body a massive roar. For actual performance gains, you would have to swap out the low-efficiency mid-pipe with an aftermarket x-pipe or h-pipe that either delete the catalytic converters or add high-flow cats with better airflow. The next step is replacing the factory exhaust manifold with either short tube or long tube headers. Short tube headers replace the stock exhaust manifold and most can attach directly to the stock mid-pipe. Long tube headers, on the other hand, feature full length tubing that requires the use of a corresponding shorty x- or h-pipe. Long tubes provide the 302cid V8 with an exhaust outlet that's virtually back pressure free providing gains of up to 30 horsepower. Performance exhaust components can give the '87 Mustang a nice horsepower and torque bump, but may not be emissions legal in your area unless you carry classic or collector car insurance or some other smog exemption.

Time is generally unkind to a car's exterior, and while hundreds of thousands of miles can be put on the engine, the exterior accessories are not so resilient. Both the headlights and taillights on the Fox Bodies are prone to fading, becoming cloudy and/or yellowish in color. Stage 3 carries light packages that can give the Mustang's front end a stock or a modern appearance. Most of our headlights are capable of mounting various HID kits and come standard with the newest projector housings. Understandably, the factory wheels of the 1987 Mustangs have probably seen some better days by now.
