Performance upgrades for the 1990 Ford Mustang
The 1990 model year carried on with the much-loved Fox Body and kept the two trim levels present since 1987. The base model LX Mustang still used Ford's 2.4L inline 4-cylinder while the GT came standard with the 302cid Windsor V8 that had been first introduced with the second generation Mustang IIs. All of the 1990 Mustangs received a complimentary 25th anniversary dash emblem with the Running Pony Tri-Bar logo. The only real mechanical difference was the introduction of a driver's side airbag system to satisfy new safety regulations from the NHTSA. Most of Ford's research and development energies were focused on the upcoming SN-95 Mustangs, and further efforts into the old Fox Body had all but stopped. Even though Ford's attention was elsewhere, Fox Body enthusiasts and the performance aftermarket kept turning out high-quality parts that still give the 1990 Mustangs new lives for nearly any application.
The Windsor V8 is one of the most easily modifiable engines ever found on the Mustang and a few simple bolt-on engine compartment upgrades can give fantastic power and torque gains without completely draining your wallet. The first place we here at Stage 3 Motorsports go when overhauling an engine is the air system. We like to swap out the factory air box for a cold air intake system that can add up to ten horsepower by supplying the 5.0L V8 with a higher amount of cold charge air that expands more violently in the combustion chamber. Another simple bolt-on that also gives excellent power gains is a new throttle body and EGR spacer kit that further optimizes airflow into the Mustang's intake manifold for an additional gain of 10 to 15 horsepower in an extremely easy installation. More power can be squeezed out of Ford's Windsor engine by replacing the factory accessory pulleys with a set of aftermarket underdrive pulleys. Underdrive pulleys slow down the rotational speed of the engine's belt-driven accessories which decreases drag on the belt and gives the 302cid back around 10 horsepower that would otherwise be lost.
The 1990 Mustang's exhaust system is a a frequent target of modifications and represents an opportunity to give the Fox Body a healthy '60s era muscle car growl and add even more horsepower. The stock mufflers, kickovers and tips need to be replaced with a complete cat-back exhaust in order to get any type of sound gain. A Mustang aftermarket cat-back exhaust comes in many forms, but in general uses optimized exhaust tubing, including straight-through mufflers or muffler deletes, to give the V8 big sounds with mild performance gains. Replacing the factory mid-pipe with an aftermarket x-pipe or h-pipe will help to eliminate back pressure in the Fox Body's exhaust system. Performance mid-pipes usually include high-flow catalytic converters or completely delete the converters in order to give maximum performance. Even more horsepower and torque can be gained by exchanging the factory exhaust manifold with either short tube or complete long tube headers. Short tube, or ''shorty,'' headers replace the exhaust manifold and can use the stock mid-pipe or long aftermarket mid-pipes. Long tube headers run from the engine exhaust ports all the way under the Mustang and require the use of a shorty mid-pipe from the same brand in order to function correctly. The total investment is often worth it, because long tube headers can provide up to 30 horsepower by making the exhaust system back pressure free. Some of these exhaust parts may not meet emissions guidelines in your area unless you carry classic or collector's car insurance. Check your local emissions guidelines.
Stage 3 provides any 1990 Mustang owner the means to revamp at least some of the weathered exterior components that have had to stand up to over twenty years of near-constant use. One of the most popular replacement items for Fox Body Mustangs are both the headlights and taillights that tend to get cloudy or completely fail over time. We carry a good selection of third generation Mustang lights for the front and rear come in classic stock configurations or fully modern systems that include LED and CCFL projectors that can be used with HID kits to give the lights a full makeover. Wheel Replicas and OE wheels provide Fox Body owners with several style and finish options to replace the aging wheels on the 1990 GT or LX. Our wheels have several different designs including classic five-spokes and split-spokes in multiple sizes that can meet any need and fit the older 4-108mm lug pattern of the Fox Bodies. The Nitto NT555 is our preferred tire and has nearly perfect handling attributes and traction without creating excess noise, vibration and harshness under daily driving conditions. Contact Stage 3 for the latest tire pricing and to find the size perfect for your application and wheel size. |
