Performance upgrades for the 1991 Ford Mustang

1991 Mustangs received a few upgrades over their 1990 cousins including a new cylinder head for Ford's 2.3L inline 4-cylinder engine in the LX model that pushed total horsepower output at the flywheel to 105hp from 88hp by using two spark plugs for each cylinder. The GTs kept the 302cid high-output V8 that had been a Ford mainstay for decades. With both sales and production of the Fox Body slumping and with most of Ford's energy and cash flow directed at the research and development of the SN95, the GTs only received cosmetic optional packages for 1991 including four new exterior colors and an option for 16'' alloy wheels with a classic five-spoke design. The lack of any major overhauls was a blessing for the performance parts sector, as nearly all of the aftermarket accessories from the 1987 model year onward could still be used with the 1991 Mustangs.

The 5.0L Windsor, combined with the Fox Body's spacious engine bay, is one of the most workable engine configurations ever to be used on a Mustang. While it's total output was a fairly low 225hp (by today's standards), a few simple engine compartment upgrades can add up to 35 horsepower in bolt-on installations. Preliminary gains of up to 10 to 15 horsepower can be found by replacing the stock air box with a cold air intake that delivers a higher volume of cooler charge air to the Windsor and giving the 1991 Mustang a serious power and torque bump. While you have the inlet tube and intake system at least partially disassembled, dropping in a new throttle body and EGR spacer can put on another dozen horses by making the airflow into the intake manifold more efficient. One of the most overlooked engine upgrades are underdrive pulleys that give horsepower back to the engine by slowing down the speeds of belt-driven accessories like the alternator and water pump. The lower speeds result in less drag on the belt and gains of up to another ten horsepower are typically seen.

To really push the 1991 Mustang to its absolute performance limit without going into the bounds of forced induction, the exhaust system will need a complete makeover. Most upgrades begin with a cat-back exhaust that replaces all of the components aft of the catalytic converters. Cat-back kits either completely delete or feature mufflers designed to optimize airflow and produce huge sounds reminiscent of first and second generation Mustangs. Most of these kits feature mandrel-bent kickover pipes and performance tips that reduce back-pressure for at least some power gains. More serious horsepower and torque needs require ditching the factory mid-pipe with its restrictive stock catalytic converters with an aftermarket x-pipe or h-pipe that can come with high-flow converters or delete the catalysts all together for maximum exhaust outflow and performance gains. A set of short tube or long-tube headers round out the exhaust system and allow the engine to generate even more raw power. Short tube, or ''shorty'' headers as they're commonly called, replace the the stock exhaust manifold with precisely designed tubing and can attach to the stock mid-pipe for most applications. Long tube headers require a short mid-pipe from the same brand and run from the engine exhaust ports all the way under the Mustang. Long tube headers have very little back pressure and can add up to 30 horsepower to the engine. Some of our mid-pipes and headers may not meet emissions requirements in your area unless you carry classic or collector's car insurance or have some sort of other smog exemption. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.

The exterior components of Ford's Fox Body Mustangs don't tend to hold up as well as the 302 Windsor or its internals. One of our more popular exterior items for 1991 Mustangs are both headlights and taillights. We have several designs in our inventory that keep your Mustang looking stock or can offer your lighting system a complete modernization with LED and CCFL projector headlamps that can mount the latest HID kits. Wheels are another common replacement item and Stage 3 carries both OE and Wheel Replica brands whose wheels all have the 4-108mm lug pattern for the Fox Body Mustangs. OE has several different wheel designs that are perfect for nearly any look or styling theme. We recommend the Nitto NT555 series of ultra-high performance tires for all of our Mustang owners. These tires have excellent road-holding abilities and provide near-perfect handling with causing noise, vibration or harshness from affecting the daily drive. Contact Stage 3 for the latest tire prices and sizing questions.
