Performance upgrades for the 1997 Ford Mustang.

No major modifications were undertaken between the 1996 and 1997 Mustang model years. Ford continued shipping their 4.6L SOHC V8 with the GT package and the 3.8L Essex V6 for the base model. The Cobra's 300 horsepower 4.6L DOHC V8 likewise returned completely unchanged. Ford had sold almost 190,000 Mustangs during the 1996 model year and refused to fix what was apparently not broken. The only change worthy of note was that addition of a Passive Anti-Theft System upgrade for each of the trim levels and a new interior upholstery option. The exact same body design and exact same engines mean nearly all of Stage 3 Motorsports' performance accessories from the previous model year carried over, allowing the 1997 Mustang to reach the same heights as the majority of its predecessors.

The stock intake system is horribly inefficient and costs the engine large amounts of horsepower. Luckily, a few easy to install, bolt-on performance parts can put all that power and torque back into your accelerator pedal. The first step is to replace the stock air box with a fully functional cold air intake. The majority of CAI systems for SN95s include inlet tubing that forces the high-capacity filters out into the fender well to avoid heat-soak from the engine. Most of our CAIs at Stage 3 Motorsports see increases of up to 10 horsepower because of the larger amount of cool charge air they provide the engine. Even more significant gains can be found with a new throttle body. Aftermarket throttle bodies have larger diameters than stock and allow for more efficient airflow into the Mustang's intake manifold. Most throttle bodies can give the 4.6L V8 up to another 10 horsepower in addition to the power gains caused by the CAI. Stock belt pulleys eat up a lot of unnecessary engine power, but a set of underdrive pulleys can give it all back. Underdrive pulleys are smaller and lighter than the cast iron pulleys from the factory and slow down the speeds of the belt-driven accessories like the water pump and alternator. This slowing effect reduces drag on the belt for increased engine output.

The 1997 Mustang's exhaust system can provide the car with much more power and muscle car growl after a serious makeover with premium performance exhaust components. The factory mufflers are designed to strictly limit the SN95s sound, and the included kickover pipes and tips cause more back pressure than necessary with their crimped bends. Replacing all of these restrictive parts with a cat-back exhaust will improve your Mustang's exhaust note while slightly enhancing horsepower and throttle response. Cat-backs are great for sound, but performance gains really start with a new x-pipe or h-pipe to replace the factory's mid-pipe and catalytic converters that cause loads of back pressure that chokes the engine. Stage 3's aftermarket mid-pipes have a large variety of designs and come with new, high-flow catalytic converters or eliminate the converters to maximize exhaust performance. Depending on the design specifics, both x-pipes and h-pipes can add up to 10 to 20 horsepower. For an exhaust system that is almost completely free of back pressure and other restrictions, a set of shorty headers or long tube headers will be needed. Short tube, ''shorty,'' headers are direct replacements for the stock exhaust manifold and allow for the use of the factory mid-pipe or other stock-length mid-pipe. Shorty headers have efficient, mandrel-bent tubing that lowers restrictions for up to a 10 horsepower gain. Long tube headers require the use of a specialized shorty mid-pipe and feature long tubing that runs underneath the SN95 and gives the engine an exhaust outlet that's virtually free of back pressure and boost total power output by up to 30 horsepower. Not all of our mid-pipes or long tube headers are legal for street use in emissions-controlled areas. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.

Ford's Modular 4.6L V8 can handle hundreds of thousands of miles of use, but the exterior of the Mustang doesn't generally hold up as well. Stage 3 Motorsports' most popular exterior items are both headlights and taillights for SN95s. We have headlights that have a bone-stock appearance that function as simple replacements or full lighting overhauls that include headlights with integrated LEDs and CCFL halos with projector lenses capable of mounting the newest HID kits. To round out the 1997 Mustang's exterior, we carry a large wheel selection from OE Wheels and Wheel Replicas. Our wheels can return your Mustang to stock or give it cutting-edge, unique styling that is guaranteed to turn heads. Along with wheels, we offer the Nitto NT555 series of ultra-high performance summer tires for SN95s. The NT555 has a sophisticated design that gives them amazing handling performance without creating noise, vibration or harshness that typically ruin the daily drive. Tire prices change daily so contact Stage 3 Motorsports for the latest pricing and size availability.
