Performance upgrades for the 1999 Ford Mustang.
Though still utilizing the SN95 body design, the 1999 Mustang saw major exterior changes in the form of sharper lines and sleeker contours over the 1998 model to fit into Ford's ''New Edge'' design philosophy. With the revised body came serious engine upgrades in the form of new heads, cams, intake manifold and returnless fuel system that pushed the GT's 2V 4.6L Modular V8's total horsepower to 260hp with 302ft/lbs of torque. Base models received an updated version of the 3.8L Essex V6 with a new split-port induction system that caused horsepower to jump to 190hp with 225ft/lbs of torque. The 1999 Cobra is infamous for having an advertised 320 horsepower rating from Ford, but many barely managed to place 305hp at the flywheel causing an embarrassing recall. A production Cobra wouldn't be seen again until 2001. The more powerful engine gave new life to the Mustang performance parts market allowing the new SN95 to be a star performer on the street, track or drag strip.
Stage 3 Motorsports carries several bolt-on engine modifications can add up to a total of 30 horsepower at the flywheel and have the standard GT competing neck-in-neck with their Cobra cousins. By far the easiest upgrade for your engine bay is one of our cold air intakes. The majority of cold air intakes (CAIs) for 1999 Mustangs route a larger amount of cooler charger air than the stock air box can produce to the throttle body and intake manifold. Most CAIs use a conical, high-capacity filter mounted in the fender wall to find enough cool air to boost performance. With the Mustang's air system taken apart for the CAI, it becomes extremely simple to drop in a new, high-performance throttle body that adds 10 more horsepower on top of that created by your new intake. Aftermarket throttle bodies have wider diameters than stock and allow larger amounts of charge air into the intake manifold for more power and improved throttle response. 15 more horsepower can be found by using a set of underdrive pulleys. Underdrive pulleys are direct stock replacements and allow the 4.6L to produce more power by slowing down the belt-driven accessories. The slower rotation of the alternator, water pump and crank shaft reduces drag on the belt giving that lets the engine produce more power at the flywheel.
The SN95's 4.6L lacks the awesome sounds of previous Mustang engines like the 302cid Windsor and 351 Cleveland, but can regain at least some of those great tones by updating the exhaust system. Most of Stage 3 Motorsports' customers begin their exhaust overhauls with a new cat-back exhaust. Cat-back systems feature improved mufflers or muffle deletes for loud, unique exhaust notes. The new kickover pipes and tips are usually made from mandrel-bent tubing that has less back pressure than the factory's crimped pipes for minor horsepower and torque gains. Power gains only really begin by replacing the stock mid-pipe with an aftermarket x-pipe or h-pipe. Replacement mid-pipes either completely delete the Mustang's catalytic converters or have built-in high-flow catalysts for increased exhaust outflow. Performance mid-pipes can provide an additional 10 to 20 horsepower depending on its design and features. More horsepower can be found through the use of either shorty headers or long tube headers. Short tube, ''shorty,'' headers are more efficient replacements for the stock exhaust manifold and generally reuse the factory mid-pipe while providing 5 to 10 horsepower gains. Long tube headers are purposely designed to eliminate back pressure and improve exhaust scavenging which can add up to 30 horsepower to the engine's total output. Long tube headers require the use of a shorty mid-pipe from the same brand for proper fitment and run from the engine's exhaust ports to underneath the SN95. Many headers and mid-pipes do not meet emissions requirements in some areas. Check your local guidelines before ordering.
Your 1999 Mustang's new-found power needs the uprated handling to match. Stage 3 Motorsports carries full brake kits that include calipers, rotors, pads and often new brake lines that can bring heavy SN95s with the most powerful modifications to a dead stop in seconds. The Nitto NT555 series is our preferred tire and have an excellent balance of handling and general drivability. These ultra-high performance summer tires have a sophisticated design that gives them great traction without generating a lot of noise, vibration and harshness. Contact Stage 3 Motorsports for the latest tire pricing and size availability.
Interesting and aggressive exterior upgrades still exist for the SN95 that give the 1999 Mustang an original, unique appearance. The Complete ROUSH Front Fascia for the New Edge Mustangs is one of our top-selling body pieces and features oversized lower grill openings and new fog lights integrated into its sleek design. New Wheels from Stage 3's large selection of OE Wheels and Wheel Replicas can give your 1999 Mustang a classic, modern or entirely unique appearance that perfectly complements the sharp lines of the New Edge styling. |
