Performance upgrades for the 2000 Ford Mustang.
The new millennium saw the return of the New Edge SN95 Mustangs with the 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 for GTs and a revised version of the 3.8L Essex V6 that now came from the factory with an Intake Manifold Runner Control system that slightly boosted the base model's horsepower rating to 193hp with 225ft/lbs of torque. The GTs were offered a ''Spring Package'' with new color options, body scoops, stripes and larger 17x8'' wheels and tires. The standard Cobra did not make an appearance for the 2000 model year due to the issues and recall during the 1999 run. The race-ready Cobra R made a triumphant return for the first time since 1995. Each Cobra R featured a 5.4L DOHC V8 rated at 385 horsepower with 385ft/lbs of torque. The Cobra R was a completely stripped down Mustang with virtually no interior convenience accessories in an effort to save weight. Only 300 Cobra Rs were manufactured and they sold extremely quick. With the continuation of many of the same design elements from 1999, the Mustang performance parts market was adequately prepared for the 2000 model year, and Stage 3 Motorsports has a wide assortment of aftermarket parts that push 2000 New Edge Mustangs to their absolute limits.
Though you can invest in expensive engine upgrades like superchargers to get more power out of your SN95, a few simple bolt-ons for your engine compartment can push the 4.6L's power rating up enough to compete with the meanest competition. Bolt-on, drop-in power starts with the Mustang's air system by way of a cold air intake. Cold air intakes (CAI) give the engine more air with cooler temperatures than the stock air box and help correct the factory air/fuel ratio. Most CAIs have inlet tubing that comes from the engine to the fender wall where their highly efficient conical filters will be better protected from the V8's high heat output and add up to 15 horsepower to its output. Before finishing the installation of the CAI's inlet tubing, another easy aftermarket swap is a new throttle body. Throttle bodies make airflow into the intake manifold more efficient with larger diameters and improved valve designs. Most throttle bodies we carry at Stage 3 can give your engine another 10 horsepower along with better throttle response. A set of underdrive pulleys round out the engine bay and give your Mustang another 10 horsepower with relative ease. Underdrive pulleys replace the stock cast iron belt pulleys of the alternator, water pump and crank with smaller and lighter designs that slows down the rotational speeds of these accessories. The slower speeds create less drag on the belt which allows the engine to give more power to the flywheel.
If Stage 3's engine upgrades still didn't give you enough power for your tastes, then its time to move on to the exhaust system. The factory exhaust fails to give the 2000 SN95 a big, throaty sound like the first generation Mustangs and lacks the considerable power needed for street and track performance. Stage 3 Motorsports has several cat-back exhaust options that will give your SN95 the V8 roar that's missing from the stock configuration. Every cat-back system has a slightly different design, but all of them replace the factory mid-mufflers with specialized versions or full deletes to make their specific tones and notes. Cat-backs can cause some horsepower gains by replacing the stock kickover pipes and tips with full mandrel-bent tubing that have less back pressure. Greater power gains can be reached by ditching the factory mid-pipe for either a new x-pipe or h-pipe. Aftermarket mid-pipes can come with high-flow catalytic converters or delete the converters for even better exhaust flow. Up to 10 to 20 horsepower can be added on to your Mustang's power output depending on the diameter and converter design of the x-pipe or h-pipe. If that's still not enough power, then it's time to exchange your stock exhaust manifolds with shorty headers or long tube headers to push the 2000 Mustang to its limit. Short tube ''shorty'' headers are more efficient, direct replacements for the factory manifolds and can generally reuse Ford's mid-pipe for power gains in the 5hp to 10hp range. Long tube headers are the most power exhaust modifications that Stage 3 Motorsports has for the SN95s, and they help the engine produce another 30 horsepower. Long tube headers start at the engine's exhaust ports and run under the car to a required aftermarket shorty mid-pipe to create an exhaust outlet that's virtually free of back pressure. Please note that some aftermarket mid-pipes and headers may not be street legal in your area. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.
Uprated handling is a practical must-have for Mustangs with loads of high-performance power modifications. The Mustang's heavy curb weight and aftermarket horsepower accessories don't mix well and need brakes that can handle the strain. Stage 3 has several complete brake kits from brands like Wilwood and Baer that come with new rotors, calipers and pads that can handle high horsepower and performance applications with ease. For improved handling and traction, we recommend the Nitto NT555 tire series to all of Stage 3's customers. The NT555s are ultra-high performance summer tires that have a cutting edge design that balances performance needs with low noise, vibration and harshness for the daily driver. With the power and handling to make it stand out on the track, your 2000 Mustang needs to have a unique appearance that makes it look fast while at a complete stop. One of Stage 3 Motorsports' best-selling body pieces for SN95s is the Complete ROUSH Front Fascia Kit. This official ROUSH fascia adds aggressive fog lights and huge lower grill openings that give the Mustang considerably more road presence for a race-ready appearance. New wheels from either OE Wheels or Wheel Replicas have the ability to change the entire shape of the Mustang and have many different spoke designs for classic or wholly original looks. |
