Performance upgrades for the 2003 Ford Mustang.
With General Motors shuttering its Camaro and Firebird production, the Mustang was left to soldier on alone as the premier survivor of the Pony Car market, and Ford offered some of their most powerful production Mustangs yet to pull ahead of the game. The SVT Cobra returned with a vengeance. It's 4.6L DOHC V8 was mated with an Eaton M112 roots-style supercharger that pushed its output to 390 horsepower with 390ft/lbs of torque that may have been initially underrated by Ford. The Mach 1 was brought back for the first time since 1978 and came with a 305 horsepower 4.6L DOHC V8 with most of its components sourced from previous Cobras. The Mach 1 had Brembo brakes, the same suspension package as the earlier Bullitt editions and a functional shaker hood kit. The base model and GT saw more paint color options, but remained roughly the same mechanically as previous years. The 3.8L Essex V6 powered base Mustangs while the 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 with its 260 horsepower moved the GT. Your friends here at Stage 3 Motorsports have parts for all of the 2003 Mustang models, including the Cobra and Mach 1.
Some of our most popular, and easiest to install, performance enhancements can also give your Mustang amazing power and torque gains with almost no hassle. The most common upgrade for the Modular engines is a new cold air intake. Cold air intakes use a large, open air conical filter tucked into the fender well away from the engine's heat. The shielded filter and insulated inlet piping give the engine more air with lower temperatures that can push the SN95's output up an extra 15 horsepower. Another simple aftermarket addition to the Mustang is a throttle body, which can be installed while the air system is removed for the cold air installation. Most performance throttle bodies are larger than stock, have better construction and feature more efficient valves that optimize airflow into the intake manifold for up to a 10 horsepower gain. The last engine compartment upgrade that's fairly easy and gives good power gains is an underdrive pulley set. Underdrive pulleys are smaller and lighter than the stock pulleys and slow down the rotational speeds of the alternator, water pump and crank to lower drag on the drive belt. The decreased drag allows the engine to have more power at flywheel in the range of 10hp.
After squaring away the engine bay, the SN95's exhaust can be upgraded with a huge selection of Stage 3 Motorsports' aftermarket parts to push power levels even higher while getting a big, V8 growl. The most simple exhaust modification you can make is a cat-back exhaust system. Cat-backs replace all of the exhaust pieces rearward of the catalytic converters. Most cat-back kits for SN95s include improved mufflers or full muffler deletes that provide the sound and mandrel-bent kickover pipes with large tips that give slight power and torque gains. Big horsepower increases start at the mid-pipe, and Stage 3 has a huge selection of both aftermarket x-pipes and h-pipes that are specifically designed for more efficient exhaust flow than stock. These mid-pipes can come with high-flow catalytic converters or cat deletes for even better outflow. New mid-pipes allow for gains of 10 to 20 horsepower depending on the specifics of their designs. Topping off your Mustang's exhaust system improvements is a set of headers. Headers come in two varieties: short tube, ''shorty,'' headers are direct replacements for the stock exhaust manifold and can hook into the factory mid-pipe, while long tube headers run from the engine's exhaust ports to a required short mid-pipe. Shorty headers add up to 10 horsepower, while long tubes add up to 30 horsepower and are generally more expensive. Some mid-pipes and headers may not meet emissions requirements in your area. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.
The SN95's high curb weight and stock braking and handling components don't combine well with additional horsepower, torque and high speeds. Stage 3 Motorsports has many full brake kits that include high performance rotors, calipers, pads and brake lines from notable manufacturers like Wilwood and Baer that are designed for road racing and other performance applications. Handling improvements can be found with a set of Nitto NT555 tires. The NT555 series are ultra-high performance summer tires that have an advanced tread and support design built to provide excellent road-holding and cornering for the track and low noise, vibration and harshness for daily drivers.
