Performance upgrades for the 2004 Ford Mustang.
2004 was the final year of the the SN95 body style. Ford focused on the launch of the revised S197 body style for 2005, but all of the models from 2003, including the supercharged SVT Cobra and the finely-honed Mach 1, made glorious comebacks. In celebration of the Mustang's 40th anniversary, Ford gave all of their models a special galloping pony badge. The base model received a new engine in the form of 3.9L Essex V6, but delivered the same 193 horsepower as its slightly smaller predecessor. The GT kept the refined 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 with its 260 horsepower and 302ft/lbs of torque. It was a bittersweet year for the Mustang, and the next year would see such a significant overhaul that mostly overshadowed the humble SN95s. Still, Stage 3 Motorsports has all of the 2004 Mustang performance parts necessary that keep the final fourth generation cars competitive with their modern cousins.
A few bolt-on engine compartment upgrades are available at Stage 3 that can increase horsepower upwards of 30hp in quick, hassle-free installations. The most common enhancement for the 4.6L V8s is a cold air intake. Our cold air intakes (CAI) have several different configurations, but all generally use a high capacity air filter in the fender well and insulated inlet tubing to give the engine a large amount of air with low temperatures. The large, cooler charge air adds about 15 horsepower onto total output, in some cases. Most of Stage 3's customers chuck on a new throttle body in addition to the CAI, because the cold air installation involves disconnecting the inlet tubing from the stock throttle body anyway. Aftermarket throttle bodies have wider openings, are built out of high-quality materials and have more efficient valves than stock. Most performance throttle bodies add up to 10 horsepower to the engine's total power by increasing airflow into the intake manifold. The final easy engine mod that can bring decent power gains to the table is a set of underdrive pulleys. The factory pulleys are usually made out of heavy cast iron and cause your belt-driven accessories to use more power than is absolutely necessary for their respective functions. Underdrive pulleys are both lighter and smaller than stock and slow down accessory speeds to free up engine power at the flywheel. Most underdrive pulley kits can give the engine back up to 10 horsepower.
Using Stage 3 Motorsport's many Mustang aftermarket exhaust systems will see your 2004 SN95 not only gain horsepower, but an aggressive V8 growl like first and second generation Pony Cars. When it comes to updating the exhaust components of SN95s, almost all our customers start with a cat-back system. Cat-backs use new, specialized mufflers or full muffler deletes to give the Mustang massive sound gains. The kickover pipes included with most cat-backs are usually mandrel-bent, instead of crimped like the stock versions, for small gains in horsepower and torque. Larger exhaust tips add to the sound and likewise improve performance. Gains of up to 10 or 20 horsepower can be accomplished by replacing the stock mid-pipe with a new performance x-pipe or h-pipe. Aftermarket mid-pipes have high-flow catalytic converters, or catalyst deletes, along with mandrel-bent tubing to get rid of performance-robbing back pressure. Even more horsepower can be squeezed out of the 4.6L V8 with a set of shorty headers or long tube headers. Headers replace the stock exhaust manifold with more efficient tubing that only differs in overall length and effectiveness. Short tube, ''shorty,'' headers are direct replacement for the factory manifolds and run from the engine to the stock mid-pipe while giving the engine an extra 10 horsepower. Long tube headers have full-length tubes that go from the exhaust ports to underneath the car where they require a shorty mid-pipe from the same brand for proper fitment. Despite the extra work involved with long tube headers, their massive 30 horsepower gains are often worth it. Some mid-pipes and headers may not meet emissions requirements in your area. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.
