Performance upgrades for the 2009 Ford Mustang.

Ford's Mustang remained basically unchanged going into the 2009 model year. The S197 body style stayed for each model and all of engines from 2008 carried over to their respective models. The base model Mustang came standard with the 4.0L Cologne V6 with 210 horsepower and 240ft/lbs of torque, the GT received the 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 with 300 horsepower and the Shelby GT500 returned with its 5.4L DOHC V8 and M122H supercharger with a total output of 500 horsepower and 480ft/lbs of torque. The Bullitt made a brief return for 2009 and kept its 315 horsepower version of the 4.6L V8. A new version of the GT500, the KR ''King of the Road'' edition, made its debut and had an uprated 5.4L and supercharger combination that hit 540 horsepower and came with suspension, exhaust upgrades and loads of carbon fiber goodies that made it 22lbs lighter than a stock GT500, but drove its price up to nearly $80,000. The S197 body design and the engines of the V6 and GT models were entering their fourth year of continuous production, and despite the global economic problems, the aftermarket performance parts sector thrived. Stage 3 Motorsports carries a massive inventory of performance products for each 2009 Mustang model that prepares them for track or street use.

Several bolt-on engine components can make the S197 drive and feel like an entirely new car without having to break the bank on a forced-induction system, crate motor or other serious engine overhaul. Stage 3's best selling performance enhancements are cold air intakes for GTs and base model Mustangs. Cold air intakes (CAIs) easily provide 15 horsepower gains with an installation that can take less than hour. We have CAI systems from most major performance brands, but each intake features similar designs. Most of our CAIs use high-capacity filters, insulated inlet tubing and protective heat shields to give the engine a high volume of very cool charge air that creates a better air/fuel ratio. Some CAIs produce so much airflow that your Mustang will require custom PCM calibrations to avoid engine damage and get maximum power and torque out of your parts. Our own Stage 3 Custom tuning can get you the power you need while also qualifying you for our Loyalty Tunes program where you can receive free tunes for life on certain products purchased from Stage 3 Motorsports. Most of our customers also install a new throttle body in conjunction with a CAI, mostly because the CAI install requires taking the intake system apart anyway. Aftermarket throttle bodies use high-quality construction, larger intake openings and more efficient valve designs to increase airflow into the intake manifold for gains of up to 10 horsepower. Owners of GTs with the 4.6L V8 can get some extra power with a set of underdrive pulleys. Underdrive pulleys replace the heavy cast iron factory accessory pulleys with smaller and lighter designs that reduce drag on the drive belt. The lower drag allows the engine to use more power at the flywheel in the range of 10hp.

Updating your 2009 Mustang's exhaust system with the latest aftermarket performance kits will provide your S197 with a loud, throaty exhaust note and plenty of extra horsepower, if you're willing to invest in a complete exhaust overhaul. Unlike the previous generation's SN95s, the new S197s use a rear muffler configuration that allows simple axle-back kits to provide your Mustang with a big muscle car growl. In general, axle-backs use a combination of performance mufflers or muffler deletes and large exhaust tips for sound gains with very slight performance improvements due to marginally reduced back pressure. Larger horsepower increases can only be accomplished with an aftermarket x-pipe or h-pipe. These performance mid-pipes directly replace the factory mid-pipe with highly efficient mandrel-bent tubing and high-flow catalytic converters that boost power by up to 10hp. Some designs delete the catalytic converters entirely for larger gains of around 20 horsepower. The best way to reduce pressure and get the most power out of your exhaust components is with a set of headers that replaces the factory exhaust manifold. ''Shorty,'' short tube headers are direct stock replacements and feature mandrel-bent tubing that creates an efficient outflow path between the engine and stock or stock-length mid-pipe. Long tube headers, on the other hand, run from the engine's exhaust ports all the way under the Mustang where they latch into a required short mid-pipe from the same brand. Most long tube systems allow the engine to produce up to 30 extra horsepower by practically eliminating back pressure. Stage 3 Motorsports carries several long tube header and mid-pipe combination kits that guarantee correct fitment and maximize power gains. Some mid-pipes and headers may not meet emissions requirements in your area. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.

It's generally not recommended to have a heavy, highly-modified 2009 Mustang running around on the stock suspension and brakes. One of the best suspension modifications for the S197 is lowering springs. Lowering springs alter the Mustang's center of gravity allowing you to take harder corners on the track or street. Most of Stage 3's lowering spring sets have unique designs that greatly reduce body roll, acceleration squat and braking dive for a smoother, flatter ride. Adding stopping power requires one of our many full brake kits from power brands like Wilwood, ROUSH and Baer. Most of our kits come standard with high-performance calipers, uprated rotors and performance brake pads. All of these brake kits are designed for high speed track applications and allow even the most powerful Mustangs to stop on a dime. Handling performance can be further improved by switching over to a set of Nitto NT555 ultra-high performance summer tires. Nittos have sophisticated tread patterns and are made from advanced materials that keep race-modified Mustangs on the track without causing a lot of noise, vibration and harshness on daily driver S197s. Contact Stage 3 Motorsports for the latest tire pricing and size availability.

The sharp styling cues of the S197 can easily be customized with a whole host of exterior accessories that add on to its aggressive, retro look. DG Custom Auto's quarter window louvers and side window scoops are some of Stage 3's most popular and good looking body modifications. Both DG's scoops and louvers come pre-painted to match your Mustang's factory paint color and install easily with double-sided automotive tape. Our best-selling ROUSH front fascia gives the 2009 Mustang one of the most menacing and aggressive looks on the aftermarket. ROUSH's fascia ha a redesigned lower grille opening with an extra set of fog lights integrated into the fascia's frame while an extra set of ducts are cut into each side. For something more original or extreme, Stage 3 has several full body kits that cater to nearly any taste or theme. Our selection of over 60 wheels with unique spoke designs, finishes and sizes is perfect for finding a new look or replacing the worn stock wheels.

Supercharging is all the rage these days, and one of ROUSH Performance's excellent supercharger kits are some of Stage 3 Motorsport's most popular forced-induction systems. ROUSH provides 2009 Mustang owners with two different supercharger options that differ in their total outputs based on particular applications. Owners of street-driven Mustangs and S197s that only run in light track events should look into the M90 ROUSHcharger that can push the 4.6L V8 up to a total of 435 horsepower with 400ft/lbs of torque and won't require extensive engine modifications. More drastic track applications and raw power needs will require the ROUSH TVS 2300, the most popular of which is the R2300 single-belt, phase 2 version, that can instantly provide 550 horsepower with 500ft/lbs of torque. The massive amount of power that the TVS series can provide usually requires a new short block and other engine internals to prevent catastrophic failures.

Despite the massive horsepower differences, many of the same types of upgrades for 2009 GT and base model Mustangs can push the Shelby GT500 and its 5.4L V8 to their maximum potential. The combination of a cold air intake and Stage 3's custom tuning can give a huge 35 horsepower jump in total output and also qualify you for our Loyalty Tunes that will net you free tunes for life on selected products purchased from Stage 3 Motorsports. The Shelby's Eaton M122 supercharger can gain up to 3psi of boost with the use of a Steeda supercharger pulley for huge horsepower and torque gains in a small, easily-installed package. The GT500 greatly benefits from long tube headers that eliminate most of the factory exhaust's back pressure. Even though GT500s come from the factory with uprated suspensions, performance lowering springs will give your Shelby a more aggressive stance and also help with cornering during street driving. GT500s built solely for the track should use a set of Steeda Coilovers to allow all 4000lbs worth of high performance power to fly around corners. Steeda's coilovers have multiple adjustment settings that allow you to dial in your suspension tuning to meet your application.
